The body of a man who was murdered 37 years ago has finally been identified in Montgomery County. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office announced that the body was found in Crater Lake near FM 3083 and Exxon Rd. in the Conroe area in August 1986. Witnesses spotted the body partially submerged in the water, and deputies arrived at the scene to retrieve it. The autopsy revealed that the man, who remained unidentified until now, died from multiple gunshot wounds.

The man was described as being between 20 and 30 years old, approximately five foot six inches tall, weighing 133 pounds, with a slight build. He had collar-length reddish-brown hair, decaying teeth, and several tattoos, including a small devil on his left lower arm, the name “Liz” on his left upper arm, and the word “Baby Dawn” on his right upper arm. He also had a pierced left ear lobe. The man was found wearing men’s blue denim jeans, a brown short-sleeve shirt, and white athletic socks.

In 2015, the man’s remains were exhumed by Cold Case Detectives in order to obtain DNA for entry into the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS). However, this did not lead to an identification. In May 2023, the remains were exhumed again to obtain additional DNA for Forensic Investigative Genetic Genealogy (FIGG). Othram Lab in The Woodlands successfully obtained more DNA and conducted a genealogy assessment. They identified a possible family member in California and obtained a DNA sample for testing.

In October 2023, Othram Lab confirmed the familial match between the unknown remains and the family member in California. The remains have now been identified as those of Clarence Lynn Wilson, born on February 18, 1952, with a last known address in Texas City.

The investigation into Wilson’s murder is still ongoing, and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Cold Case Squad is urging anyone with information to come forward. They can be reached at 936-760-5820 or Multi-County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-392-STOP [7867].
