Chennai: Tragedy struck in two separate incidents as a college student and a daily wage worker were electrocuted after returning home from a relief camp on Friday.
The first victim, V Priyadharshini, an 18-year-old college student from Pinjivakkam village in Kadambathur, Thiruvallur district, was electrocuted when she switched on a heater in her residence. According to a police officer, “On Friday evening, Priyadharshini switched on the coil heater to boil water. She suffered an electric shock and was flung off.” She was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead upon arrival.

In another tragic incident, Sahayaraj, a 40-year-old daily wage worker from the Adi Dravidar colony, was electrocuted when he touched the main door of the farmhouse where he was working. Sahayaraj, who was staying with his family at a farmhouse in Mamallapuram, had moved to a government school turned relief camp due to the heavy rain. Police and Tangedco staff arrived at the scene and disconnected the power. Sahayaraj was pronounced dead by the para-medical staff of the ambulance and his body was taken to Chengalpet Government Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
These accidents serve as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by electrical equipment and infrastructure during times of heavy rain and flooding. It is crucial for individuals to exercise caution and ensure that all electrical appliances and connections are in proper working condition before using them.
In related news, schools and colleges in Chennai were granted a holiday on Friday by the Chennai district collector. This decision was made to aid in flood relief work. The district of Tiruvallur also announced a holiday for schools. The Tamil Nadu government had previously declared holidays for educational institutions in Chennai and surrounding districts since Monday, in response to the impact of cyclone Michaung.
Additionally, relief materials worth Rs 2.5 crore were sent from Coimbatore to assist the flood-affected population in Chennai. The Coimbatore district administration organized the dispatch of these materials on 22 trucks.
