Newly released 911 phone calls have revealed the horrifying moments students experienced as a mass shooter opened fire on the University of Nevada’s campus on Wednesday. The incident, which left three faculty members dead, was carried out by suspected gunman Anthony Polito, 67, who had recently been rejected from a job at the college.

The chilling calls captured the panic and fear of those caught in the crossfire. One woman pleaded for help, saying, “Someone’s shooting inside the office. Please hurry.” Gunshots could be heard in the background as she desperately waited for assistance. Another caller reported hearing shots fired and screaming as they ran for safety.

Parents also frantically dialed 911, informing authorities that their children were hiding in classrooms. One mother received a text from her daughter, who expressed her fear. The operator advised the mother to instruct her daughter to stay calm and not open the door unless she hears the police announcing themselves.

Authorities later revealed that Polito had a list of specific targets but, unable to locate them, resorted to indiscriminate firing. One additional victim was injured but in stable condition. The deceased victims were identified as Cha Jan Chang, Patricia Navarro Velez, and Naoko Takemaru, all faculty members at the university.

The police quickly responded to the scene and engaged in a firefight with Polito, resulting in his death. The officers involved, Det. Nathaniel Drum and officer Damien Garcia, were praised as heroes for their actions. Both have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, according to department policy.

The incident comes just a day after a shooting in Austin and San Antonio, further highlighting the urgent need for gun control measures. President Joe Biden expressed his sadness over the tragedy and called for immediate action. He emphasized that gun violence should not become the new norm and urged Congress to pass legislation, including banning assault weapons and implementing universal background checks.
