By | December 9, 2023

A 42-year-old man has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with the death of a man near a homeless encampment on the westside, according to a news release from the Bloomington police department (BPD) on Saturday morning. The suspect, Craig A. Pearson, was identified and apprehended after interviews with witnesses on Thursday and Friday. Pearson, described as a “transient” in the release, is someone who lacks stable housing or employment and moves from place to place.

The incident occurred on December 7, when officers responded to a report of a death in a wooded area near Wheeler Mission on S Westplex Avenue around 5:40 p.m. The victim’s identity has not yet been confirmed by the Monroe County coroner’s office. The body showed signs of multiple injuries consistent with being cut or struck by a sharp object.

The investigation is still ongoing, and the BPD has urged anyone with information about the murder to contact detective Josh Burnworth at (812) 339-4477. The BPD distinguishes between “transient” and a “person experiencing homelessness” in its general police order on encampments. The latter refers to individuals who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence, while the former refers to someone who moves through areas briefly without staying for a long time.

The tragic incident highlights the vulnerability of those living in homeless encampments and the need for increased support and resources for this population. The BPD’s ongoing investigation aims to bring justice to the victim and ensure the safety of the community.

As the investigation continues, the BPD is working diligently to gather evidence and information to build a strong case against the suspect. The arrest of Craig A. Pearson brings some closure to this tragic event, but the authorities are still urging anyone with knowledge of the incident to come forward and assist in the investigation.
