New court documents have revealed disturbing details about the suspect involved in a shooting rampage across Texas this week. According to the documents, Shane James, a former U.S. Army officer, allegedly broke into a home where he killed a woman and her daughter with “special needs.” The suspect later attempted to escape from jail but was quickly overpowered by deputies.
The incident occurred on Tuesday night when James pushed past a corrections officer while being held in the Travis County Jail. However, he was stopped in the hallway and restrained by deputies. The jail is a secure facility, making it impossible for James to escape.

Authorities are still investigating the motive behind James’ attacks, which left six people dead and three injured. It has been revealed that he had an active arrest warrant related to an incident from early 2022, raising questions about whether the rampage could have been prevented.
James now faces charges of capital murder of multiple persons and capital murder by terror threat/other felony, which are punishable by death. A hearing is scheduled for January 18.
The newly released probable cause affidavit describes one of the attacks that took place in Austin. James broke into a residence, fired multiple shots, and stole a car before fleeing the scene. Two women inside the home were found with gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead on the scene.
The violent chain of events began with the discovery of James’ parents’ bodies in their San Antonio-area home. The attacks then continued throughout the day, with multiple victims being shot and killed.

James had been known to law enforcement in Bexar County, where his family resides. He had previously been arrested on misdemeanor assault charges but was released on bail. In March 2022, James cut off his ankle monitor, prompting an arrest warrant for violating his bond.
The Texas Organizing Project, a nonprofit organization that supports defendants who can’t afford bail, helped bail James out in 2022. They have stated that they followed their screening process at the time and that James was deemed eligible for their bail program.
Authorities are now working to trace the weapon used in the attacks and determine how James obtained it. The investigation is ongoing, and more details are expected to emerge in the coming weeks.
