By | December 9, 2023

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has suspended a doctor in Kerala after his 26-year-old girlfriend died by suicide following the cancellation of their wedding due to dowry demands. The doctor, identified as EA Ruwais, was allegedly involved in the suicide of a woman doctor named Shahana, who was pursuing her postgraduate training in surgery.

According to reports, Shahana’s relatives claimed that Ruwais and his family had asked for a significant amount of dowry, including gold, land, and a BMW car, in order to marry her. It is believed that when Shahana’s family couldn’t meet these demands due to financial limitations, Ruwais withdrew the marriage proposal.

The IMA confirmed its decision to suspend Ruwais and stated that he had been arrested under the dowry prohibition act and remanded to judicial custody. The National Commission for Women (NCW) has expressed deep concern over Shahana’s death and has requested a detailed action report within five days from the Kerala police. The NCW has also urged the police to invoke relevant sections of the Dowry Prohibition Act and the Indian Penal Code (IPC) if the allegations are verified.

Kerala Health Minister Veena George has ordered an investigation into the allegations of dowry harassment linked to Shahana’s death. The Director of the Women and Child Development Department has been instructed to furnish a detailed report on the probe into the accusations of dowry harassment involving a male doctor at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College.

Shahana, a postgraduate student in the surgery department of Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, was found dead at her rented apartment near the medical college. Her family claims that the doctor accused in the case insisted on receiving dowry, leading to the cancellation of the wedding and ultimately Shahana’s suicide.

The Kerala Women’s Commission has visited Shahana’s family and called for a thorough investigation into the issue. The commission intends to request a report from the police regarding the steps taken in the case.
