Witnesses informed deputies that the victim, later identified as Lauren Goppert, was walking northbound in an area where there were no lights or designated crosswalks. Goppert attempted to cross the roadway to go southbound when a passing driver collided with her.

Lt. Kenneth Benoit of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office stated that the driver tried to change lanes to avoid Goppert but was unable to do so in time. Skid marks at the scene indicated the driver’s attempt to brake. The driver immediately pulled over and waited for law enforcement personnel to arrive.

Benoit also mentioned that another vehicle stopped to avoid hitting Goppert and was subsequently rear-ended by another car. Authorities suspect there may have been a third vehicle that ran over Goppert without realizing it, assuming they had hit debris.

Emergency Medical Services arrived at the scene and pronounced Goppert dead. The driver involved in the accident stayed at the scene and showed no signs of impairment. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office Vehicular Crimes Division is currently investigating the incident, and no charges have been filed thus far.
