Two women were killed by an elephant in the Simdega district of Jharkhand, according to forest officials. The incident occurred near Ekoda village in the Bano area, about 110 km from the state capital Ranchi, on Friday evening. The victims, Marium Mundain, 55, and Kamlawati Devi, 45, were returning home from a village market when the elephant attacked them.

Ashok Kumar Gupta, the divisional forest officer (DFO) in Simdega, stated that they are closely monitoring the movement of the elephant. He explained that when elephants become separated from their herd, they tend to be more aggressive and attack people. The forest department has provided immediate assistance of Rs 10,000 to the families of the deceased.

In Jharkhand, the government offers a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the families of those killed in elephant attacks. However, the remaining amount of ex gratia will only be provided after completing some official procedures, according to Gupta.

Elephant-human conflicts have become a recurring issue in many parts of India, particularly in areas where human activities encroach upon the natural habitats of elephants. The loss of habitat and food sources has forced elephants to venture into human settlements in search of sustenance, leading to such unfortunate incidents.

The government and forest departments have been implementing various measures to mitigate such conflicts, including creating buffer zones, constructing barriers, and raising awareness among local communities. However, the challenge remains in striking a balance between the conservation of these magnificent animals and the safety of human populations.

It is essential for both government and local communities to work together to find long-term solutions to prevent such incidents and ensure the peaceful coexistence of humans and elephants.
