LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A tragic shooting at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) campus on Wednesday has claimed the life of a third victim. The victim has been identified as 69-year-old Naoko Takemaru, according to the Clark County coroner’s office.

The cause of Takemaru’s death has been determined to be multiple gunshot wounds, as confirmed by the coroner. Takemaru was an Associate Professor of Japanese Studies at UNLV and was highly regarded in her field. She had authored a book titled “Women in the Language and Society of Japan: The Linguistic Roots of Bias” and had also written articles for various journals.

This tragic incident has also claimed the lives of two other professors. They have been identified as Professor Cha Jan “Jerry” Chang, 64, from Henderson, Nevada, and Assistant Professor Patricia Navarro Velez, 39, from Las Vegas.

The shooting has left a visiting professor, aged 38, critically injured. The professor is currently receiving treatment at a hospital and is in a life-threatening condition.

The UNLV community and the wider Las Vegas community have been left shocked and devastated by this senseless act of violence. The university has expressed its deep condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims and is providing support to those affected by the tragedy.
