By | December 8, 2023

Las Vegas, Nevada – The 67-year-old gunman who carried out a shooting at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) on Wednesday had a list of other individuals he was targeting at the school, as well as at East Carolina University in North Carolina, where he used to work. Thankfully, none of the faculty members at UNLV who were on the shooter’s list became victims. Instead, investigators believe that when he couldn’t find his intended targets, he randomly shot others who happened to be in the building.

Law enforcement officials have revealed that before the UNLV shooting took place, the gunman sent out 22 letters without return addresses to professors across the country. These letters were eventually located by federal authorities. The first letter that was opened contained a white powder, which was later identified as talcum powder. Tests are currently being conducted on the remaining letters to determine their contents.

The three individuals who lost their lives in the shooting have been identified as Cha Jan Chang, 64, an associate professor, Patricia Navarro Velez, 39, an accounting professor, and a third victim whose identity has not been released yet. The third victim was also not a student at UNLV. Additionally, a 38-year-old visiting professor was wounded in the incident, and his condition has been downgraded to life-threatening.

Police have stated that the shooter appeared to be facing financial difficulties. When authorities searched his apartment after the shooting, they found an eviction notice on his front door. The gunman had previously worked as a tenured associate business professor at East Carolina University from 2001 to 2017 but had resigned. He had recently applied for jobs at UNLV and other colleges in Nevada but was rejected each time.

As a result of the shooting, the UNLV campus will remain closed until Friday, and classes and academic-related activities have been canceled until Sunday, December 10.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, as law enforcement officials work to determine the motive behind the shooting and gather more information about the gunman’s actions leading up to the tragic event.
