A man is in a critical condition after being shot by a Hemet police officer assigned to the Riverside County Regional Gang Task Force, according to the sheriff’s department. This is the third police shooting in less than a week in Riverside County, California. The incident took place at around 7:30 p.m. on Thursday in Valle Vista, an unincorporated area of Hemet. The officers from the task force tried to approach the man, but he fled, leading to a foot chase. During the chase, the man pulled out a handgun and the officer fired, hitting the man. The officers provided medical aid until paramedics arrived, and the man was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. Thankfully, no officers were injured during the incident. The Hemet police officer involved in the shooting will be placed on paid administrative leave, as per the department’s policy. The identities of both the officer and the man have not been released. The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office will lead the investigation into the shooting.

This shooting comes just a day after the Riverside Police Department reported another officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of a man. The incident occurred in the La Sierra neighborhood when police were checking on a vehicle in an apartment driveway. The suspect driver produced a firearm, leading to an officer firing their weapon. The driver, identified as Ryan Joseph Smith, was taken to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries. A firearm was recovered at the scene. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office, and the Riverside Police Department are investigating this shooting.

Another incident took place on Tuesday when a deputy stationed at the Hemet Sheriff’s Station encountered a person holding a handgun while fueling up his patrol vehicle. The deputy gave commands to the suspect, but the suspect continued to manipulate the weapon, resulting in a deputy-involved shooting. The deputy was unharmed, and the suspect received medical aid before being transported to a local hospital. The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office and the California Highway Patrol are leading the investigation into this shooting.
