The gunman responsible for the tragic shooting at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas has been identified as Anthony James Polito, a 67-year-old academic who was facing financial struggles. Polito, a semi-retired business professor, lived in Henderson, Nevada and was on the verge of eviction from his home.
According to Sheriff Kevin McMahill of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Polito had been denied employment by several higher education institutions in the state. On Wednesday, he entered Beam Hall, the building that houses UNLV’s business school, and opened fire on four faculty members. Three professors lost their lives, while one sustained injuries.

It has been discovered that Polito had compiled a “target list” of individuals at both UNLV and a university in Greenville, North Carolina, where he had previously taught. However, none of the individuals on the list were harmed, and authorities have reached out to ensure their safety.
In addition to the shooting, Polito had sent 22 suspicious letters to various university personnel across the country. These letters were mailed from a Henderson Post Office and lacked a return address. Investigators are still trying to determine the exact motive behind the shooting, as it appears that students were not the primary targets.
The weapon used by Polito, a Taurus 9mm handgun, was legally purchased in 2022. He had brought 150 rounds of ammunition with him to the campus.
This tragic incident has left the university community shocked and devastated. As the investigation continues, authorities are working to provide support to those affected by the shooting.
