Polito, a semi-retired business professor, was facing eviction from his home due to his financial difficulties. Investigators discovered that he had been denied employment by multiple higher education institutions in the state. The shooting took place on Wednesday inside Beam Hall, the building that houses UNLV’s business school, where all four victims were faculty members.

According to authorities, Polito had created a “target list” consisting of individuals from UNLV and a university in Greenville, North Carolina, where he had previously taught. Fortunately, none of the individuals on the list fell victim to the attack, and authorities have made contact with most of them to ensure their safety.

In addition to the shooting, Polito had also mailed approximately 22 suspicious letters to various university personnel across the country. The letters, sent from a post office in Henderson, did not include a return address.

The police have confirmed that Polito legally purchased a Taurus 9mm handgun in 2022, which he used in the shooting. He was also found to be carrying 150 rounds of ammunition.

Authorities are still investigating the precise motive behind the rampage, as it remains unclear why Polito targeted the professors. However, it appears that students were not his primary focus.

The tragic incident has once again highlighted the need for improved mental health support and early intervention measures within academic institutions to prevent such acts of violence.
