Former College Professor Identified as Gunman in Shooting at University of Nevada, Las Vegas Campus

Police responded to a shooting at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas campus on Wednesday, where the gunman targeted faculty members. The suspect, identified as 67-year-old Anthony Polito, had a “target list” of individuals he intended to harm, according to law enforcement. Fortunately, everyone on the list has been contacted, except for one person who is traveling internationally. Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill confirmed that none of the individuals on the list became victims.

Prior to the attack, Polito sent 22 letters to various university personnel across the country, all without a return address. In one of the intercepted letters, investigators found an unknown white powder. Authorities are urging anyone who received such mail to contact the authorities. Polito, a former college professor, had applied for multiple job opportunities at different colleges but was rejected each time. Police believe his frustration over these rejections may have been the motive behind the shooting.

Three victims of the shooting have been identified as professor Cha Jan Chang and assistant professor Patricia Navarro Velez, both faculty members at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The third victim’s identity will be released after notifying their next of kin. UNLV President Keith Whitfield expressed his heartbreak over the incident and praised the support and cooperation shown by the university community during the aftermath of the shooting.

Authorities are still trying to understand Polito’s motive for the shooting. Sheriff McMahill stated that the suspect was struggling financially at the time, as evidenced by an eviction notice found at his residence. Police have found no indication of any other suspects involved in the shooting.

The shooting at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas campus has left the university community in shock and mourning. As the investigation continues, the focus is on providing support to the victims’ families and ensuring the safety of the campus community.
