A former college professor, Anthony Polito, was identified as the shooter responsible for an attack on the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) campus. The incident left three people dead and one critically wounded before Polito died in a shootout with police. It has been discovered that Polito had ties to Duke University and East Carolina University (ECU). He received an MBA from Duke’s Fuqua School of Business in 1991 and worked as a professor at ECU from 2001 to 2017.
One former student of Polito’s, Hunter Peyton, who attended ECU and had the shooter as a professor in 2010, expressed his shock and disbelief at the news. Peyton described Polito as relatable and well-liked among students, making the situation even more difficult to comprehend. Polito had recently applied for a job at UNLV but was unsuccessful. Lee Bernick, a professor who narrowly missed the shooting, reflected on the changing environment on college campuses. He mentioned how safety concerns used to revolve around weather conditions, not shootings. Bernick expressed his sympathy for the victims and highlighted the trauma experienced by students and staff as a result of such incidents.
Other professors, including Linda Lister and Kevin L. Stoker, who have connections to UNLV and previously lived in Greensboro, North Carolina, also shared their thoughts and condolences. They conveyed the shock and sadness felt by the campus community and emphasized the importance of helping students process and heal from this traumatic experience.
The police are still investigating the motive behind the shooting. The incident began on the fourth floor of a building on the UNLV campus. In addition to the casualties, four individuals were hospitalized due to panic attacks, and two officers sustained injuries while searching for more victims. UNLV will remain closed for the week, with a decision on reopening scheduled for Monday. The focus now is on supporting the affected individuals and ensuring their well-being during this difficult time.
