John Lennon, the iconic musician and former member of the Beatles, was tragically shot and killed outside of his home in New York City on December 8, 1980. Lennon, who had risen to unimaginable fame as part of the world-renowned band and later as a solo artist and activist, was just 40 years old at the time of his death.

On that fateful day, Lennon’s murderer, Mark David Chapman, waited outside of Lennon’s home for him to return from a recording studio session. As Lennon and his wife, Yoko Ono, approached the entrance of their building, Chapman fired five shots, fatally wounding Lennon. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, Lennon had no chance of surviving such devastating injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after.

The Associated Press described Lennon as a rock star who had skyrocketed to stardom with the Beatles, while The New York Times highlighted his role as the thinking man’s Beatle.
