A man was tragically mauled to death by tigers in a zoo in Pakistan, leading authorities to close the facility for investigation. The incident occurred at Sherbagh Zoo in Bahawalpur, Punjab, and the body was discovered during a routine cleaning of the enclosure. A shoe in one of the tiger’s mouths raised the alarm.

The victim has been identified as 28-year-old Muhammad Bilawal from Lahore. According to his father, Bilawal had a history of addiction and had been through rehabilitation twice. He also had a tendency to disappear from home for a few days before returning. Bilawal was reportedly involved in three cases, although the nature of these cases has not been disclosed.
Following the tragic incident, Punjab’s Caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Commissioner Bahawalpur have appointed separate committees to investigate whether there was a breach in security or negligence by zoo employees.
Authorities suspect that the attack occurred late on Tuesday night, judging by the condition of the body. It is believed that the victim may have jumped into the tiger enclosure. Ali Usman Bukhari, a senior officer of the province’s wildlife department, stated that evidence gathered from the enclosure suggests that the victim was alive when the tigers attacked.
Zaheer Anwar, a senior local government official, referred to the victim as a “lunatic” and questioned why anyone would willingly jump into the secured den. An official from the rescue service reported that the victim’s legs were heavily mauled.

The three tigers involved in the incident have been moved to a separate enclosure while the investigation continues.
Sherbagh Zoo, formerly known as Bahawalpur Zoo, is the fourth largest zoo in Pakistan. Established in 1942 by the ruling royal family of Bahawalpur, the zoo houses a variety of animals in different styled cages and enclosures. Lions, tigers, and hyenas are kept in modern moated enclosures.
This tragic event comes just days after a zookeeper was mauled to death by a black bear in India’s Indira Gandhi Zoological Park. The incident occurred when the staff member accidentally left the night house doors open while cleaning the enclosure.
The investigation into the incident at Sherbagh Zoo is ongoing, and authorities are determined to uncover the circumstances that led to this devastating loss of life.
