By | December 8, 2023

In a shocking incident at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), a gunman opened fire, killing three people and injuring another before being identified as a career college professor. The suspect, Anthony Polito, 67, had reportedly applied for a professorship at UNLV but was not accepted for the position. He had previously worked as a professor in Georgia and North Carolina. Polito had a personal website where he claimed to have solved the Zodiac Killer case, a notorious unsolved serial killer case from the late 1960s. The shooting occurred in Beam Hall, where the college’s Lee Business School is located. The campus was put under an “active shooter” alert, leading to panic among students and staff. Police officers, both on and off duty, quickly responded to the scene. An exchange of gunfire took place, resulting in Polito’s death. Three victims were killed in the attack, while one person was critically injured. The motive for the shooting remains unknown, and authorities are investigating Polito’s cellphone and professional papers for possible clues. The victims have been identified as faculty or staff members, suggesting that they may have been specifically targeted. Several other individuals suffered panic attacks during the incident, and some officers sustained minor injuries. Law enforcement officials praised the response to the shooting, highlighting the lessons learned from the 2017 Route 91 Harvest music festival massacre, which took place nearby. The incident has once again raised concerns about gun violence in the US and the need for stricter gun control measures.
