46-Year-Old NRG Shot Dead at Motel in North Carolina

Surat: A tragic incident took place on Wednesday morning at a motel in Newport, North Carolina, where a 46-year-old NRG (Non-Residential Gujarati) from Sonwadi village in Gandevi taluka, Navsari district, was shot dead by a squatter. Satyen Naik was fired at by Troy Kellum, a 59-year-old man who later died by shooting himself.

According to Satyen’s cousin Harnish, the incident occurred when Satyen’s staff alerted him that someone had entered one of the motel’s rooms and locked himself inside. Satyen attempted to open the door, unaware that the person inside was armed. As the door opened, the individual shot at Satyen, causing severe injuries. Satyen was rushed to Carteret Health Care hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. He is survived by his wife, Ekta Naik, two children, and mother.

The police were alerted and a Special Response Team (SRT) was called in as Kellum had barricaded himself in the room. Negotiators attempted to persuade Kellum to surrender, but when he refused, the SRT team tried to enter the room. At that moment, Kellum shot himself with the same gun he had used to attack Satyen.

Following the incident, nearby schools and roads were placed under a soft lockdown as a precautionary measure. The lockdown was lifted after the police cleared the area.

Satyen Naik was well-respected in his community and known for his gentle and calm demeanor. He was the son of Prakashchandra Naik, who was the first in their family to move to the USA several decades ago. Satyen regularly visited India and had obtained a bachelor’s degree in business management.

This incident serves as a reminder of the need for heightened security measures and awareness in public spaces. The authorities are investigating the motive behind the attack, and further details are awaited.
