Webster County Man Charged with Negligent Homicide After Fatal Crash That Killed John Tanner

A man from Webster County, West Virginia, has been arrested and charged with negligent homicide after allegedly causing a fatal accident due to falling asleep at the wheel. Floyd McCourt, aged 51, was involved in a collision on June 7th on S. Main St. in Webster Springs, according to a criminal complaint.

The victim, identified as John Tanner, was sitting on a bench in front of a building when McCourt veered across the road, leaving the pavement, and striking Tanner. The impact sent Tanner flying through a nearby fence and over a wall, causing him to fall approximately 20 feet. Another individual was also hit by McCourt’s vehicle, knocking them to the ground. Fortunately, this individual was released from the hospital the following day.

Upon police arrival, McCourt admitted to falling asleep while driving and expressed that he should not be behind the wheel. Sadly, Tanner was taken to the hospital and passed away from his injuries on August 10th, as confirmed by the Medical Examiner’s Office.

The day after the incident, McCourt voluntarily visited the police station and reiterated that he had fallen asleep while driving, leading to the accident. He also mentioned that this was not the first time such an incident had occurred.

McCourt now faces charges of negligent homicide and is currently being held without bond at Central Regional Jail.

The loss of John Tanner has left a profound impact on the community. An obituary submitted to 5 News indicated that Tanner was 71 years old at the time of his tragic passing.
