University of Nevada Las Vegas Shooting Claims Lives of Faculty Members Patricia Navarro Velez and Cha Jan Chang

LAS VEGAS — The shooting incident at the University of Nevada Las Vegas on Wednesday has claimed the lives of four faculty members. The victims have been identified as Patricia Navarro Velez and Cha Jan “Jerry” Chang, both of whom were professors in the Lee Business School.

The university expressed its grief and shock in a statement, describing Wednesday as the most difficult day in its history. The institution is still grappling with the emotions of grief, loss, anger, and fear that accompany such a tragic event. The university also confirmed that another faculty member is currently hospitalized.

Patricia Navarro Velez, an accounting professor specializing in cybersecurity disclosure and data analytics, held a Ph.D. in accounting. Cha Jan “Jerry” Chang, an associated professor in the Management, Entrepreneurship & Technology department, had a Ph.D. in management information systems and had been teaching at UNLV since 2001.

The Clark County coroner’s office confirmed the identities of the victims, stating that Chang, 64, and Navarro-Velez, 39, were among the deceased faculty members. The office did not release the identity of the third victim due to the need for next of kin notification.

Meanwhile, a fourth victim who was shot during the incident remains hospitalized. The university community and the wider Las Vegas community are offering their support and condolences to the affected families and friends during this difficult time.
