University of Nevada, Las Vegas Campus Shooting: Professors Cha Jan ‘Jerry’ Chang and Patricia Navarro Velez Among the Victims; Third Deceased Victim Unidentified

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Four faculty members were shot on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) on Wednesday. The victims have been identified as Professor Cha Jan “Jerry” Chang, 64, of Henderson, and Assistant Professor Patricia Navarro Velez, 39, of Las Vegas. The third deceased victim has been identified but not yet named. The fourth victim is currently receiving treatment at the hospital.

According to the Clark County Coroner’s Office, Chang died from a gunshot wound to the head, while Velez succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds.

Chang had been a professor at UNLV since 2001, teaching at the Lee Business School. He was well-regarded in his field, having been published in various journals and invited as a speaker at several conferences. He was also a certified information systems auditor.

Navarro specialized in accounting information systems and was conducting research on cybersecurity disclosures, assurance, internal control weakness disclosure, and data analytics.

The gunman responsible for the shooting has been identified as Tony Polito, a former business professor who had previously applied for a position at UNLV but was unsuccessful. Polito killed three people and injured another before engaging in a shootout with the police, resulting in his death.

The Clark County Coroner’s Office expressed their condolences to the families of the victims and those affected by the tragic event.
