Two UNLV Professors Identified as Victims in On-Campus Shooting: ChanJan “Jerry” Chang and Patricia Navarro Velez

Two professors at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) have been identified as victims in the recent on-campus shooting that left three people dead, including the gunman. ChanJan “Jerry” Chang, a professor of management information systems at UNLV’s Lee Business School, and Patricia Navarro Velez, an assistant professor in the accounting department, were among those killed in the incident.

Chang, a 64-year-old resident of Henderson, and Navarro Velez, a 39-year-old resident of Las Vegas, were both shot and killed, according to the Clark County coroner’s office. Navarro Velez, originally from Puerto Rico, had been teaching at UNLV for several years and was a mother of four. Her former professor, Dalmid Correa, spoke highly of her and expressed his shock at her tragic death.

Chang’s office was located in Beam Hall on UNLV’s campus. He had been a faculty member at the university since 2001 and held the position of professor since 2014. The coroner’s office confirmed that Chang died from a gunshot wound to the head, while Navarro Velez succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds.

The identity of the third victim has not yet been released, and the Clark County Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner is working to notify their next of kin, according to a statement from the county.

The shooting, which occurred on Wednesday, has left the UNLV community in shock and mourning. The university has offered resources and support for those affected by the tragedy. Students, faculty, and staff are urged to seek counseling services and utilize the available support systems.

As investigations into the incident continue, authorities are working to determine the motive behind the shooting. The UNLV community is coming together to support one another during this difficult time, and updates on the case are expected to be released in the coming days.
