The tragic death of a young female doctor at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College has prompted the Kerala government to order an investigation. The deceased, Shahana, was discovered unconscious in her apartment and was later declared dead at the hospital. Police are treating the case as an unnatural death and are looking into allegations of dowry-related issues.

Kerala health minister Veena George has instructed the Director of the Women and Child Development Department to conduct a thorough probe and submit a report. Police have determined that Shahana, a 26-year-old postgraduate doctor in the surgery department, took her own life by injecting a high dose of an anesthetic drug. A suicide note was found in which she expressed her frustration, stating “Everybody wants money only.”

Shahana’s family claims that her depression was a result of the breakdown of her marriage proposal due to exorbitant dowry demands. The prospective groom, Dr. Ruwise E A, a former state president of the Medical PG Association, allegedly demanded 150 sovereigns of gold, 15 acres of land, and a BMW car as dowry. Initially, Shahana’s family agreed to provide 50 sovereigns of gold, property worth Rs 50 lakh, and a car. However, the groom’s family refused to proceed with the marriage.

After Shahana failed to report for her night duty on Monday and her friends were unable to contact her, they went to her apartment and discovered that the door was locked from the inside. The police investigation is ongoing, with statements from the deceased’s relatives being recorded. In response to the charges against him, the Medical PG Doctors Association has relieved Dr. Ruwise E A of all responsibilities.

Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the Kerala Women’s Commission, Sathidevi, accompanied by other panel members, visited Shahana’s family and demanded a thorough investigation. Shahana was the daughter of the late Abdul Aziz and Jameela of Naz Mansil, Maitri Nagar, Venjaramoodu.
