LAS VEGAS — An urgent alert was issued at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas on Wednesday morning, warning students of an active shooter on campus. Tragically, three people were killed in the incident, and the suspect died in a shootout with campus officers. Law enforcement sources have identified the gunman as 67-year-old Anthony Polito, a former college professor who had sought a job at UNLV.
The shooting began inside Beam Hall, which houses the university’s business school. Students in nearby buildings, such as the Student Union Building, heard the gunfire and quickly sought safety. One student, Shainna Alipon, described the panic and fear as she and others tried to escape the area. Alipon, who is just weeks away from graduating with a journalism degree, realized the importance of her role as a journalist and began documenting the events with her cell phone.

Another student, Kaitlyn Tinio, received the alert from the university while on the other side of campus. She immediately sought refuge in a nearby student apartment building. Tinio, originally from the Bay Area, expressed her fear and concern for the safety of herself and her loved ones.
As investigations continue, authorities are working to determine the motive behind the shooting. During a press conference, Sheriff Kevin McMahill assured the public that they would provide information about the suspect’s motivation as soon as possible.
In response to the tragic events, the university announced that the campus would be closed for the remainder of the week. Students expressed their concerns about upcoming in-person finals and the impact the shooting has had on their sense of safety.
Throughout the day, an organization brought therapy dogs to the campus to provide comfort and support to students and staff affected by the shooting.
