Three Killed in UNLV Shooting, Including Suspect Anthony Polito

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (KGO) — Urgent alerts were issued at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas on Wednesday morning, warning students of an active shooter on campus. Tragically, three people were killed in the incident, and the suspect was eventually killed in a shootout with campus officers.

Law enforcement sources have identified the gunman as 67-year-old Anthony Polito, a college professor who had previously worked in North Carolina and Georgia. Polito had reportedly sought a job at UNLV. The shooting took place inside Beam Hall, which houses the business school.

Students at the university described their terrifying experiences during the incident. Shainna Alipon, a journalism student who is just weeks away from graduation, said she heard the gunfire from inside the Student Union Building. She and her colleagues quickly sought safety, fearing that the shooter might target their building. Alipon later took cell phone videos of students evacuating to safety.

Another student, Kaitlyn Tinio, was on the opposite side of campus when she received the alert from the school. She immediately ran to the student apartments across the street and has remained there ever since. Tinio expressed her concern for the future, saying, “It just makes me feel scared for the future because it’s getting closer and closer to me, closer and closer to my family, people who I love.”

The identities of the victims have not yet been released, and authorities are working to determine the motive behind the shooting. During a press conference, Sheriff Kevin McMahill assured the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted to provide answers.

As a result of the incident, UNLV announced that the campus would be closed for the remainder of the week. Students expressed their concerns about upcoming in-person finals and their overall sense of safety on campus. Therapy dogs were brought in to provide comfort and support to those affected by the tragedy.

The UNLV shooting serves as a reminder of the ongoing issue of gun violence in the United States and the importance of campus safety measures. Authorities continue to investigate the incident, hoping to shed light on the motives behind this senseless act of violence.
