Identity of Man Who Jumped off Talmadge Bridge Still Unknown

The man who jumped off the Talmadge Bridge into the Savannah River on Sunday night has been identified as Spc. Estephan Nielsen, a soldier with the 3rd Infantry Division, according to a press release from Fort Stewart. Despite multiple days of search efforts, Nielsen’s body has not been found.

Local law enforcement and first responders were called to the bridge around 6 p.m. on Sunday. The Savannah Fire Department’s Marine Patrol unit has been leading the search for Nielsen, with assistance from the Chatham County Marine Patrol and the U.S. Coast Guard. Savannah Fire Department Public Information Officer Brian Gallagher stated that the search is still ongoing.

“We still haven’t found him at this point and still have crews searching for him,” said Gallagher. He also mentioned that the daily search by the SFD ends at around 6 p.m.

The 3rd Infantry Division has listed Nielsen as “Duty Status Whereabouts Unknown,” a term used when the Army cannot account for a soldier. Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield are fully cooperating with local agencies as the investigation continues, according to the press release.

The U.S. Army’s Criminal Investigation Division is seeking the public’s help and urging anyone with information to come forward. Anonymous tips can be submitted through the Army CID Submit-a-Tip online form.
