Professors ChaJan Chang and Patricia Navarro Velez identified as victims in UNLV shooting

LAS VEGAS — Two professors were among the three victims killed on Wednesday when a gunman opened fire at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), officials from the Clark County coroner’s office have confirmed.

The victims have been identified as 64-year-old ChaJan “Jerry” Chang and 39-year-old Patricia Navarro Velez, according to the coroner’s office. The third victim has been identified but their relatives have yet to be notified.

Navarro was an accounting professor at UNLV and held a Ph.D. in accounting. She was known for her research in cybersecurity disclosures and data analytics.

Chang was an associate professor in the Management, Entrepreneurship, and Technology department of the business school. He held degrees from Taiwan, Central Michigan University, and Texas A&M University. Chang earned a Ph.D. in management information systems from the University of Pittsburgh and had been teaching at UNLV since 2001.

The shooting occurred on the UNLV campus, resulting in the deaths of three individuals. The suspected shooter was subsequently killed by officers at the scene, according to authorities.

A fourth victim, who had been shot, was taken to Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center in critical condition. However, their condition has since been upgraded to stable.

The alleged gunman has been identified as 67-year-old Anthony Polito, who had reportedly applied for a professorship at UNLV but was not hired, sources have revealed.

Investigators have determined that the victims killed were faculty or staff members, indicating that the shooting may not have been a random act but rather a targeted attack based on previous relationships or interactions.

The incident has shocked the UNLV community and raised concerns about campus safety. The university is providing support services for students, faculty, and staff affected by the tragedy.

Law enforcement authorities are continuing their investigation into the motive behind the shooting. The Associated Press and ABC News have contributed to the report.
