Investigation ordered into alleged dowry harassment linked to the death of female doctor Shahna at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College

Kerala Health Minister Veena George has ordered an investigation into allegations of dowry harassment linked to the death of a 26-year-old female doctor in Thiruvananthapuram. The deceased, identified as Shahna, was a postgraduate student in the surgery department of Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. Police officials reported that Shahna was found dead at her rented apartment near the medical college on Tuesday morning.

Following her death, Shahna’s family claimed that the male doctor accused in the case, whom Shahna was considering marrying, demanded gold, land, and a BMW car as dowry. Allegedly, the male doctor withdrew the marriage proposal when Shahna’s family could not meet his dowry requirements due to financial constraints.

The Director of the Women and Child Development Department has been instructed to provide a detailed report on the investigation into the accusations of dowry harassment involving the male doctor at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College.

Sathidevi, the chairperson of the Kerala Women’s Commission, visited Shahna’s family and called for a thorough investigation into the issue. She stated that if it is established that the family of the prospective groom demanded dowry, a case will be registered against them under the Prevention of Dowry Act. The accused doctor, who was a representative of the Medical PG Doctors Association, has been relieved of all responsibilities within the organization due to the charges against him.

Dowry harassment is a serious issue in India, and this case highlights the need to address this societal problem. The Kerala Women’s Commission intends to request a report from the police regarding the steps taken in the case.
