Gunman Kills Three on UNLV Campus, Fatally Shot by Police

A tragic shooting at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) left three people dead and one critically injured on Wednesday, December 6. The incident was brought to an end when responding officers fatally shot the gunman.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and UNLV police received reports of an active shooter near Beam Hall, which houses the university’s Lee Business School, at approximately 11:45 am. UNLV initially tweeted about shots being fired on campus near Beam Hall. Shortly after, authorities were alerted to another report of gunfire at the Student Union building.

According to Adam Garcia, Director of University Police Services Southern Command, two UNLV campus detectives encountered the suspect, identified as a 67-year-old career college professor, outside Beam Hall. A shoot-out ensued, resulting in the suspect’s death.

Sheriff Kevin McMahill of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department confirmed that three people were killed and one was injured in the shooting. Additionally, four individuals were taken to local hospitals for panic attacks. Two officers also received minor injuries while searching for victims. The identities of the victims have not been released, and the suspect’s name is being withheld until his next of kin are notified.

During a press conference, Sheriff McMahill revealed that the suspect opened fire during a gathering outside Beam Hall, where students were eating and building Lego sets. While the motive for the shooting has not been disclosed, sources close to the investigation reported that the shooter, a college professor, had recently applied for a job at the university but was denied. The suspect was also connected to someone who worked on campus.

Both Sheriff McMahill and Governor Lombardo praised the swift response of the officers, commending them for preventing further bloodshed. President Joe Biden also expressed his condolences, stating that UNLV is the latest college campus to experience a horrific act of gun violence.

In light of the tragedy, the university campus will be closed on Thursday and Friday. The incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing issue of gun violence and the need for measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
