Former Business Professor Identified as Gunman in UNLV Shooting

A former business professor who had applied for a position at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) has been named as the gunman in the campus shooting that resulted in the death of three staff members. The shooter has been identified as Anthony Polito, a 67-year-old who had previously taught in North Carolina and Georgia.

The shooting occurred on Wednesday at Beam Hall, located on the fourth floor of UNLV’s Lee Business School. Students and staff were forced to flee or take shelter during the incident, which began shortly before noon. One person was critically injured but is now in stable condition. Law enforcement officials were able to neutralize the gunman.

The motive for the shooting remains unknown, and officials have not released any further details. Polito, who described himself as a “semi-retired university professor” on his LinkedIn page, had three degrees, including a doctorate from the University of Georgia’s Terry College of Business. He had previously worked as an associate professor at East Carolina University in North Carolina.

Polito’s LinkedIn page, which featured an “In Remembrance” banner, has since been taken down. A biography on his personal website revealed that he had also worked for companies such as Volvo and Kellogg, Brown & Root.

Following the incident, UNLV cancelled classes and most activities until Sunday. The university assured students and staff of a strong police presence on campus as the investigation continues.
