All of the victims in Wednesday’s deadly shooting at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas were faculty members, not students, the school announced on Thursday.

Three people were killed and one was critically wounded when the violence unfolded shortly before noon local time.

According to police, the shooter had a list of targets at the school, though none were students — and “none of the individuals on the target list became a victim,” said Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill.

The gunman was later identified as Tony Polito, a college professor who had applied for a job at the school but was not hired. He was killed in a shootout with police.

The chaotic scene unfolded at UNLV’s Lee Business School, where faculty and administrative offices for the accounting and marketing departments are located.

The school identified two of the deceased victims as business school professors Patricia Navarro-Velez, an accounting Ph.D., and ChaJan “Jerry” Chang, a management information systems Ph.D. who had been teaching at UNLV since 2001. The third deceased victim will be publicly identified after their relatives have been notified.

A fourth faculty member remains hospitalized.

Polito, a former professor at East Carolina University’s Department of Marketing and Supply Chain Management, often told stories in class about his trips to Las Vegas, a former student told The Associated Press.

“Yesterday was the most difficult day in the history of our university. Words are still hard to come by as we’re only beginning to process the grief, loss, anger, and fear associated with Wednesday’s tragic campus shooting,” university president Keith E. Whitfield said in a statement. “My heart breaks for the families, friends, and loved ones of Dr. Navarro and Dr. Chang, and for all of the victims of this senseless act of violence that has physically and emotionally affected so many.”
