Faculty Members Patricia Navarro Velez and Cha Jan Chang Among Victims in University of Nevada Las Vegas Shooting

LAS VEGAS — The University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) is mourning the loss of four faculty members who were victims of a shooting on Wednesday. The university has identified the victims as Patricia Navarro Velez and Cha Jan “Jerry” Chang, both members of the Lee Business School faculty.

In a statement, UNLV’s President Keith E. Whitfield expressed the university’s grief and shock over the tragic incident. He described it as the most difficult day in the history of the university and stated that they are still struggling to process the grief, loss, anger, and fear associated with the shooting. One faculty member remains hospitalized.

Whitfield also mentioned that he is working with the university’s senior leadership team and the Nevada System of Higher Education to determine the timing of the academic calendar for the remainder of the semester, including finals and commencement. An update will be provided on Friday.

Patricia Navarro Velez was an accounting professor with a Ph.D. in accounting. Her focus was on cybersecurity disclosure and data analytics, according to the university’s website. Cha Jan “Jerry” Chang was an associate professor in the Management, Entrepreneurship & Technology department at the business school. He had a Ph.D. in management information systems and had been teaching at UNLV since 2001.

The Clark County coroner’s office confirmed that both Chang, 64, and Navarro-Velez, 39, were professors, according to the Associated Press. The identity of the third victim, also a faculty member, has not been released pending notification of next of kin. The fourth victim, who was injured in the shooting, remains hospitalized.

The shooting has left the UNLV community in shock and mourning. Support and condolences have poured in from across the country. The university is working to provide counseling and support services to students, faculty, and staff affected by the tragedy.
