LAS VEGAS — Anthony Polito, the suspect behind the deadly shooting at the University of Las Vegas, Nevada, had a list of targets at the school and at East Carolina University in North Carolina, according to Las Vegas police. Polito, who killed three faculty members at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), before dying in a shootout with police, did not appear to be targeting students, law enforcement officials said.

The shooting took place at UNLV’s Lee Business School on Wednesday, causing panic and fear among students and professors. The gunman opened fire on the fourth floor, where faculty and staff offices for the accounting and marketing departments are located. One person was critically wounded in addition to the three fatalities.

UNLV officials announced that no students were killed in the shooting and identified two of the victims as business school professors Patricia Navarro-Velez and Cha Jan “Jerry” Chang. The third victim’s identity will be disclosed after notifying the family. A fourth faculty member remains hospitalized.

Authorities have not released the attacker’s motive or the type of weapon used. However, two law enforcement officials revealed that Polito, a longtime business professor, had previously sought a job at UNLV unsuccessfully. Investigators searched Polito’s apartment in Henderson, Nevada, and seized electronic devices as part of the investigation.

Polito was also a former professor at East Carolina University’s Department of Marketing and Supply Chain Management. One of his former students described him as fixated on Las Vegas, sharing stories about his frequent trips to the city. Polito was also known to obsess over anonymous student reviews at the end of each semester.

The shooting at UNLV has shaken a city still recovering from the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history in 2017. Lessons learned from that tragedy helped authorities respond swiftly to the UNLV attack.

Classes at the university have been canceled, and additional events, including a basketball game and the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, have been called off. UNLV professor Kevaney Martin, who took cover with students during the shooting, expressed her terror and emphasized that no student should have to fear pursuing their dreams on a college campus.
