Bihar: A State Struggling with Pollution

Bihar, located in eastern India, is a state known for its rich cultural heritage, historical significance, and fertile agricultural lands. However, in recent years, Bihar has been grappling with a severe pollution crisis that has adversely affected the health and well-being of its residents. The state’s cities have consistently ranked among the most polluted in India, with alarming levels of particulate matter and other harmful pollutants.

On 6th December 2023, Bihar witnessed a shocking revelation as five of its cities featured in the top 10 most polluted cities of India. This unfortunate distinction highlights the severity of the pollution problem in the state. Furthermore, seven cities were in the top 20, nine cities in the top 30, ten cities in the top 40, and eleven cities in the top 50. These statistics paint a grim picture of the environmental conditions prevailing in Bihar.

One of the worst affected cities in Bihar is Patna, the state capital. On the same day, PM2.5 levels in Patna were recorded at 84 µg/m3, a significant cause for concern. PM2.5 refers to fine particulate matter with a diameter of 2.5 micrometers or less, which can easily penetrate the respiratory system and cause various health problems. The recorded levels in Patna were lower than the previous measurement of 102 µg/m3, indicating a slight improvement. However, these figures are still well above the permissible limits set by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The reasons behind Bihar’s pollution crisis are multifaceted and complex. One of the major contributing factors is the rapid industrialization and urbanization witnessed in the state. As industries mushroom and urban areas expand, the release of pollutants into the air increases exponentially. Inadequate regulations and enforcement further exacerbate the problem, allowing industries to pollute without consequence.

Another significant source of pollution in Bihar is vehicular emissions. The state’s cities are notorious for traffic congestion and a lack of efficient public transportation systems. As a result, the number of vehicles on the roads continues to rise, releasing harmful pollutants such as carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide into the atmosphere.

Furthermore, the extensive use of fossil fuels for cooking and heating purposes in households contributes to the pollution levels. Many households in Bihar still rely on traditional biomass fuels like wood and cow dung, which emit high levels of particulate matter when burned.

The pollution crisis in Bihar has serious implications for the health of its residents. Prolonged exposure to polluted air can lead to respiratory diseases, cardiovascular problems, and even premature death. Children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of pollution, which can hinder their physical and cognitive development.

Addressing Bihar’s pollution crisis requires a multi-pronged approach. The government must prioritize the implementation and enforcement of stringent environmental regulations. Industries must be held accountable for their emissions and encouraged to adopt cleaner technologies. Additionally, promoting sustainable modes of transportation, such as cycling and public transit, can help reduce vehicular pollution.

Efforts should also be made to raise awareness about the importance of clean air and the detrimental effects of pollution. Educational campaigns can empower individuals to make informed choices and adopt environmentally-friendly practices in their daily lives.

Bihar has immense potential to overcome its pollution crisis and create a healthier environment for its residents. By addressing the root causes of pollution and implementing effective mitigation strategies, the state can pave the way for a sustainable and prosperous future.
