The shooting occurred on Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of three people and the injury of a fourth. Campus police quickly confronted Polito, who was armed with a handgun, and he was killed at the scene.

Authorities are currently searching Polito’s apartment in Henderson, Nevada, and have obtained his phone for further investigation into his motive. They are also examining his professional writings for any potential clues.

Although the victims were faculty or staff members of UNLV, it is unclear if Polito specifically targeted them or if the attack was random. The investigation suggests that Polito fired shots at the police before they shot and killed him.

Polito had an online presence, including a LinkedIn page and a personal website. On his website, he published a document about the Zodiac Killer, claiming to have decoded some of the cryptic messages from the notorious serial killer who operated in Northern California in the late 1960s. He also expressed a fondness for Las Vegas, having made numerous trips to the city over the past 15 years.

He listed his employment at East Carolina University from 2001 to 2017 and mentioned holding a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Georgia and a master’s in business administration from Duke University.

The shooting at UNLV has left the community in shock, and authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the full extent of Polito’s motives and any potential warning signs that may have been missed.
