Anthony Polito Identified as Deceased Suspect in University of Nevada, Las Vegas Shooting: Three Killed in Campus Attack

The deceased suspect in the University of Nevada, Las Vegas shooting has been identified as Anthony Polito, a 67-year-old man who had applied for a professorship at the college but was rejected. Polito opened fire on the UNLV campus on Wednesday just before 12pm, armed with a handgun. He killed three people before being shot dead by police in a shootout. The names of the three victims have not been released.

Polito had a long career in academia, spending over 15 years as an associate professor at East Carolina University. He had a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Georgia’s Terry College of Business, a Master of Business Administration from The Fuqua School of Business at Duke University, and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Statistics from Radford University.

Reports suggest that Polito may have had connections to someone who works on the UNLV campus. On his LinkedIn page, he expressed enjoyment in receiving positive feedback from his students. One student described him as one of the best teachers they’ve had, praising his knowledge and interesting class topics.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, with a search of Polito’s home currently underway. Detectives are working around the clock to gather more information about the incident. Four additional people are in the hospital, with one victim in stable condition and four others suffering panic attacks. Two officers were also treated for minor injuries.

President Joe Biden expressed his sadness and called for more action to end gun violence. He urged Congress to pass legislation, including banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, implementing universal background checks, and enacting red flag laws.

The shooting at UNLV comes just a day after six people were shot dead in Austin and San Antonio. Biden emphasized that this level of gun violence is not normal and should not be accepted. He plans to visit Las Vegas on Friday as scheduled to deliver remarks on infrastructure.
