Police respond to shooting at University of Nevada, Las Vegas campus

A mass shooting occurred at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) on Wednesday, leaving three people dead and one injured. Law enforcement sources have identified the gunman as 67-year-old Anthony Polito, a career college professor who had previously applied for a job at the school but was not accepted. The shooting took place at Beam Hall, where the college’s Lee Business School is located, at approximately 11:45 am.

Upon reports of an active shooter, students, staff, and faculty were immediately alerted and took shelter in classrooms and offices. Police responded to the scene and engaged the gunman, ultimately shooting him dead. The injured victim has been hospitalized and is now in stable condition. Several others suffered panic attacks during the incident, and a number of officers sustained minor injuries.

Anthony Polito had previously worked as a professor at colleges in Georgia and North Carolina. He also maintained a personal website where he claimed to have solved the Zodiac Killer case, although he acknowledged that he did not have any special expertise or experience in cryptography. In a 15-page article on his website, Polito outlined his theory on the identity of the notorious killer.

The university has reopened Maryland Parkway, and vehicles left on campus during the shooting can now be retrieved. However, most of the university remains closed until Monday, with staff advised to work remotely. The Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, scheduled for Thursday night, has been canceled as a sign of respect for the victims.

LeBron James, a prominent basketball player and advocate for gun control, expressed his frustration with the lack of action on gun legislation in the wake of the shooting. He called for meaningful changes to be made to the nation’s gun laws, emphasizing the need to prevent further loss of innocent lives.

This shooting at UNLV marks the 80th school shooting in the United States this year, with 51 occurring on K-12 campuses and 29 on university and college campuses. The incident highlights the ongoing issue of gun violence in the country, prompting calls for stricter gun control measures. UNLV President Keith Whitfield has released a statement expressing condolences and promising support for the affected community.
