89-Year-Old Woman Killed by Loose Pit Bull in Cass County

An 89-year-old woman was tragically killed by a 100-pound dog in Cass County, Indiana, on Wednesday. The dog, identified as a black pit bull with a white chest, is still on the loose. According to Cass County Sheriff Ed Schroder, the incident occurred in the victim’s living room.

Authorities received a distress call at approximately 5:50 a.m. reporting an elderly female who had been attacked by her own dog. When first responders arrived at the scene on County Road 400 West, they found the woman, later identified as Beverly Hayden, suffering from severe injuries caused by the dog.

Despite efforts from a family member to intervene and stop the attack, they were unable to prevent the tragic outcome. Cass County Coroner George Franklin later confirmed Hayden’s death. Notifications to her next of kin have been made.

Following the attack, the dog managed to escape from the residence and is currently still at large in the area. Law enforcement, including Logansport police, deployed a drone to search for the dog but were unsuccessful in locating it. Authorities are urging anyone who spots the pit bull to immediately contact 911 so that animal control can respond and capture the dog. They also advise against approaching the animal on one’s own.

Multiple agencies, including the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, Logansport Police Department, Cass County Animal Control, Cass County EMS, and the Cass County Coroner’s Office, are assisting in the investigation.

Sheriff Schroder has stated that no foul play is suspected at this time. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with additional information is urged to contact the sheriff’s office at (574) 753-7800.
