In a tragic incident, a 27-year-old man lost his life when a tree branch fell on him as he performed his father’s last rites in Kamata village, Koraput district. The victim, identified as Benudhar Mandal, owned a food stall in Koraput town. His father, Laxman Mandal, a weaver, had fallen ill and passed away while receiving treatment at SLN Medical College and Hospital.
On the morning of the funeral, Benudhar took his father’s body back to Kamata village. Accompanied by his family members, they reached the village cremation ground. While gathering wood for the last rites, a large tree branch unexpectedly broke off and struck Benudhar, causing severe head injuries. He was immediately rushed to the Borigumma Community Health Centre, but sadly, the doctor pronounced him dead upon arrival.

Local residents stated that the branch had fallen due to heavy rainfall brought by cyclone Michaung, which had been affecting the area since the previous night. The incident left the village of Kamata grief-stricken, and the community came together to perform the final rites for both the father and son. The police have registered the case as an unnatural death, and the district administration has instructed revenue officials to investigate the incident.
This unfortunate incident serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by falling branches during storms and the importance of taking precautions, especially when engaging in outdoor activities. The district authorities and forest department should ensure regular tree inspections, particularly in areas prone to heavy rainfall and strong winds.
