A 26-year-old doctor in Kerala, India, tragically took her own life after her boyfriend refused to marry her due to her family’s failure to meet his dowry demands. The doctor, Shahana, was a postgraduate student at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. Her lifeless body was discovered at her apartment on Tuesday morning, December 5.

Shahana’s relatives revealed that she committed suicide because her boyfriend called off their wedding when her family could not meet the exorbitant dowry requests made by his family. The Medical College police have opened an investigation into the case, registering it as an unnatural death. They have begun taking statements from the deceased doctor’s relatives.

A purported suicide note was found at the scene, in which Shahana expressed her frustration with the obsession over money. The note strongly suggested that the dowry demanded by her boyfriend’s family played a significant role in her decision to end her life.

Reportedly, Shahana’s boyfriend’s family demanded an exorbitant dowry, including gold, land, and even a BMW car. When her family was unable to fulfill these unfair and illegal demands, her boyfriend, who is also a representative of the Medical PG Doctors Association, decided to terminate their relationship and cancel the wedding.

Unfortunately, Shahana’s father had recently passed away. He used to work in the Middle East, adding to the family’s struggles.

Reacting to this heartbreaking incident, Kerala Health Minister Veena George instructed the Women and Child Development Department to launch an investigation and submit a report. The Kerala Women’s Commission Chairperson, P Sathidevi, also visited Shahana’s mother to express her condolences. Sathidevi called for a thorough investigation into the matter and stated that the women’s commission would request a report on the police’s actions.

Sathidevi stressed that if it is proven that the boyfriend’s family demanded dowry, they should be charged under the Prevention of Dowry Act. The state Minority Commission has also opened an inquiry based on media reports.

Furthermore, the Medical PG Doctors Association has relieved Shahana’s boyfriend of all his responsibilities within the organization, considering the charges against him.
