Manhunt Ends as Person of Interest in Teen’s Death Surrenders
MONTGOMERY COUNTY — The manhunt for Tommy Moreland, 29, of Dayton, has come to an end as he turned himself in to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office this morning. Moreland was identified as a person of interest in the death of a local 15-year-old girl, Heaven Washington. He has since been booked into the Montgomery County Jail.

Moreland was previously linked to a “rolling shootout” that resulted in Washington’s tragic demise in Harrison Twp. Montgomery County Sheriff Rob Streck expressed relief that Moreland had turned himself in, stating, “If he would not have turned himself in and we located him, there’s all kinds of things that could always happen… It’s just always better that it turns out this way.”
According to reports, Moreland led law enforcement on a high-speed chase on the day of the shooting before abandoning the SUV he was driving. Since surrendering, Moreland has refused to cooperate with investigators, refusing to speak to detectives.
However, the victim’s grandmother, Alice Washington, expressed her gratitude that Moreland is now behind bars. She said, “I am happy. I thank God, I’ve been praying and praying, and asking God to bring him to justice.”
Sheriff Streck also expressed his satisfaction with the resolution, saying, “The murder of anybody is a tragedy, but when it’s an innocent 15-year-old that was on her way to school to go on a field trip, it really heightens the level for my detectives and everybody involved.”
