Officers were unaware the incidents were connected until after they arrested the suspect, who has not been named, interim Austin Police Chief Robin Henderson said in a media briefing early Wednesday. Henderson added it’s uncertain if there is any relationship between the suspect, a male in his 30s, and the victims.
In addition to an eight-hour shooting spree across Austin, the suspect may also be responsible for a “grisly” double homicide in San Antonio, more than 70 miles southwest of the Texas capital, authorities said.
He was booked into the Travis County Jail and was charged with capital murder, Henderson said. Additional charges against the suspect are “pending.” She added that the suspect had an outstanding warrant for his arrest charging him with assault causing injury to a family member.

The next shooting occurred around 5 p.m. when the suspect shot a male cyclist in southwest Austin, Henderson said. The cyclist suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Around 7 p.m., the suspect shot at officers who were responding to a 911 call about a burglary in progress at a home less than a mile from the previous shooting. One officer suffered multiple injuries, which Henderson described as not life-threatening.
The suspect fled in a vehicle before he subsequently crashed and was nabbed by officers, ending the spree more than eight hours after the first shooting in Austin.
Inside the home where the firefight had occurred, police found two people dead inside. Police believe the suspect to be responsible for those deaths, Henderson said. They did not release how the two people died.
Police investigating suspect’s connection with San Antonio murders
Authorities are investigating the suspect’s connection to the double murder in San Antonio after a man and a woman in their 50s were found dead inside a house. Police believe they were killed before the suspect’s shooting rampage in Austin.
On Tuesday night, the Austin Police Department communicated to officials in Bexar County, which encompasses San Antonio, that the suspect in the Austin shootings had connections to the residence. Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said in a media briefing that it was unclear what the suspect’s connection was to the home.
