Travis County, Texas – Police have identified the suspect behind a shooting rampage that left six people dead and several others injured in Texas. The suspect, Shane James, 34, was apprehended after a confrontation with the police during a mental health call at his parents’ residence. The incident occurred a day before the suspect’s identification was announced.
According to reports, James had cut off his ankle monitor despite having an outstanding warrant for his arrest. The Bexar County Sheriff, Javier Salazar, stated that the suspect’s parents were among the six individuals killed in the shooting. James is now in custody and is expected to be charged with capital murder in the coming days.

The violent spree began when an Austin Independent School District police officer was shot outside Northeast Early College High School. The officer sustained a gunshot wound to the leg but is expected to recover fully. Shortly after the incident, two individuals were found dead in the 7300 block of Shadywood Drive. Another shooting occurred when a cyclist was shot on West Slaughter Lane. The cyclist’s injuries were reported to be non-life-threatening.
Later, a 911 call led police to a burglary in progress on Austral Loop. Upon arrival, an officer encountered James, who opened fire, striking the officer multiple times. The officer returned fire, but James managed to flee the scene in a vehicle. After roughly 15 minutes, authorities apprehended James following a car crash at the intersection of South Highway 45 and FM 1826.
Inside the home on Austral Loop, two more individuals were found dead. The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office was contacted after authorities discovered a connection between the suspect and a residence in East Bexar County. Deputies forced entry into the home and found two individuals in their 50s dead in a small room. The cause of death has not been determined yet.
Authorities believe that the killings in Bexar County initiated the chain of events, but the motive behind the attacks or whether they were random remains unclear. The investigation into the incidents is ongoing.
