Minneapolis Man Charged in Deadly Shooting at Edina Strip Mall Parking Lot; Victim Identified as Darien Roberson

Edina, Minn. – A Minneapolis man has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with a deadly shooting that occurred in the parking lot of an Edina strip mall last weekend. Kayvon Madison, 22, claimed self-defense, but police say that video evidence contradicts his story.

The incident took place on Saturday, Dec. 2, around 9 p.m. Police responded to the scene, located near the Galleria and Southdale Center, after receiving reports of a shooting. They found the victim, 23-year-old Darien Roberson from St. Paul, who had been shot and later died at the scene.

Madison, who was among the individuals who called 911 after the shooting, told dispatchers that he had shot someone who had attacked him. However, further investigation revealed that Madison and Roberson were part of a group celebrating a birthday dinner at a restaurant. Although they were not close friends and had not spoken since 2021 due to a disagreement over the death of a mutual friend, tensions escalated during the gathering.

Police reviewed security footage, which contradicted Madison’s version of events. The video showed Madison and Roberson leaving the restaurant together. After taking some photos, Roberson appeared to be leaving, but Madison approached him and said something. Witnesses stated that Madison made insensitive comments about Roberson’s deceased friend, who had died from an overdose.

The confrontation intensified as both men took steps towards each other. Eventually, Madison raised his hand and put his finger in Roberson’s face. Roberson slapped Madison’s hand away and took a step back. In response, Madison pulled out a gun and shot Roberson five times. Witnesses quickly restrained Madison after the shooting.

Roberson sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his chest, cheek, neck, back, and shoulder. Madison is currently being held in Hennepin County Jail and is expected to appear in court on Thursday.
