Massachusetts Woman Lauren Erickson Van Wart Killed in Shark Attack While Paddleboarding in the Bahamas

On Monday, a tragic incident occurred in the Bahamas as a woman was killed in a shark attack while paddleboarding. The victim has been identified as 44-year-old Lauren Erickson Van Wart, who was on vacation from Massachusetts.

According to reports, Van Wart was paddleboarding near the Sandals Royal Bahamian Resort in New Providence, the most populous island in the Bahamas. The attack took place around 11:15 a.m. local time. A lifeguard from the resort witnessed the shark attack and immediately launched a rescue boat to save both Van Wart and a male relative. Despite receiving prompt CPR, Van Wart succumbed to her injuries, which were described as “significant trauma to the right side of her body” by the authorities.

Van Wart’s mother-in-law shared with ABC affiliate WCVB-TV that she was on vacation with her husband when the tragic incident occurred.

Sandals Resort expressed their condolences in a press release, stating, “We wish to express our heartfelt condolences to the guest’s family and loved ones. We remain in close contact with them and are providing all support possible during this difficult time.”

Van Wart worked for Curriculum Associates, a company that collaborates with educators to create educational tools and programs for classrooms. The CEO of Curriculum Associates, Rob Waldron, spoke about her loss, saying, “Our team is heartbroken and grieving the loss of a dear and trusted colleague and friend. [She] infused her deep dedication to students and educators into every material she touched.”
