39-Year-Old David Adam McFall Identified as Suspect in Officer-Involved Shooting That Leaves Roanoke City Police Officer Critically Injured; McFall Had History of Criminal Charges and Escaping from Custody

Roanoke, Virginia – David Adam McFall, a 39-year-old man, has been identified as the suspect in the officer-involved shooting that left a police officer critically injured on Sunday. Roanoke Police approached McFall on Melrose Avenue NW after he was suspected of being involved in a fatal stabbing that occurred several days prior on Lawrence Avenue in Southeast Roanoke. According to the police, McFall fired shots at the officers first, prompting several officers to return fire, resulting in his death.

McFall had a criminal history dating back at least six years in Roanoke City, Roanoke County, and Franklin County. Court documents revealed that he had previously escaped from custody while serving as an inmate. In July 2019, McFall walked away from a work detail in Roanoke County. He was serving time for a robbery at a Roanoke County home and had been sentenced to 23 years, with 19 years and ten months suspended. Following his escape, he received an additional three-year sentence, with two years suspended.

The suspect faced several other criminal charges in Southwest Virginia, including stealing a gun, using a firearm in felony first offense, and stealing a car worth more than $1,000. He also served time for criminal misdemeanor assault and battery of a family member, and was charged with violating a protective order in Franklin County in 2020.

The police officer who was critically injured in the shooting is reportedly recovering well. The Virginia State Police (VSP) are leading the investigation, and once completed, the evidence will be turned over to the Roanoke City Commonwealth’s Attorney. Roanoke City Commonwealth Attorney Don Caldwell stated that a meeting with VSP is scheduled for Thursday morning to discuss the officer-involved shooting. Caldwell expects the decision-making process regarding potential charges to be swift since the shooting has been well-documented.

The incident has left the Roanoke community reeling, but authorities are working diligently to bring closure.
