FORT LAUDERDALE — The Broward County Sheriff’s Office announced on Tuesday that they have finally identified a suspect in connection with a 25-year-old cold case involving the sexual assault and murder of a woman. The victim, formerly known as Jane Doe, has now been identified as Eileen Truppner.

Sheriff Gregory Tony held a press conference to reveal the breakthrough. He stated, “She is no longer faceless. She is no longer nameless.” Investigators have identified Lucious Boyd, a suspected serial killer currently on death row for another homicide, as the main suspect in Truppner’s murder. Boyd was indicted by a grand jury on November 29 for the murder.

Boyd will now face an additional first-degree murder charge, as well as sexual battery charges, according to the Sheriff’s Office. During the press conference, a BSO investigator described Boyd as a predator.

Truppner’s body was discovered in December 1998 by a boater in a grassy area off of U.S. 27. For years, she remained unidentified until recent DNA and detective work led to her identification. Truppner, originally from Puerto Rico, had moved to South Florida to take English classes and was a mother of two.

During the press conference, Truppner’s sister spoke about her, saying, “My sister was very kind. She had a good heart. She would never hurt anyone.”

Boyd is already on death row for the murder of another woman, Dawnia Dacosta, also from 1998. Dacosta, a 21-year-old nursing student, went missing on December 5 while walking along Interstate 95. Her body was found two days later, showing signs of sexual abuse.

Boyd, the son of a local funeral home director, was arrested for Dacosta’s murder in the parking lot of James C. Boyd Funeral Home. He was subsequently charged with murder, kidnapping, and sexual battery in that case.

The identification of a suspect in Truppner’s murder brings hope to the families of both victims, as justice may finally be served after all these years.
