Tragic Incident Claims Lives of Seven Workers in Vijayapura Corn Warehouse

Vijayapura: After a grueling rescue operation, seven bodies have been recovered from the debris, while one lucky individual was saved and is currently receiving treatment at a government hospital. SP Rishikesh Sonawane confirmed the demise of seven out of eight workers who were trapped under a massive pile of corn and a broken container carrying tons of grains.

The tragic incident occurred at the Rajguru corn processing industry’s warehouse, leading to the booking of a case against the supervisor. The owner of the industry, Kishor Kumar Jain, has announced compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the relatives of each deceased worker and Rs 2 lakh to the injured.

The deceased have been identified as Rajesh Mukhiya (25), Rambrij Mukhiya (29), Shambhu Mukhiya (26), Ram Balak (52), Lakhu (45), Dalchand Mukhiya (20), and Kishan Kumar (20). The rescue operations commenced on Monday at 6:00 pm.

The incident occurred on the evening of December 4 when numerous bags of corn stored in the warehouse fell on the laborers. All the workers were reportedly from Bihar.

District in-charge Minister MB Patil, who promptly visited the site, highlighted the ongoing efforts to retrieve the bodies. He expressed his condolences and emphasized that the workers were from another state.

Patil stated that the immediate priority is to recover the bodies, perform autopsies, and arrange for their transportation to their respective states. The exact cause of the incident is yet to be determined and will be investigated. If the warehouse owner is found at fault, appropriate legal action will be taken.

Patil has already informed the Chief Minister about the incident and assured that efforts will be made to provide financial aid to the victims’ families, despite the workers being from another state. He also emphasized the responsibility of the owner to compensate the victims.

One fortunate individual survived the incident and is now out of danger after receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained.

Regarding reports of a similar incident in the past that resulted in two deaths, which was allegedly concealed, Patil confirmed that an inquiry will be conducted, and any responsible parties will not go unpunished.
