Richmond Woman Arrested in Connection to Downtown Petersburg Shooting
A 24-year-old woman from Richmond has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of a man at a downtown apartment complex parking lot last week. Jasmine Yancey has been charged with first-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. She is currently being held at Riverside Regional Jail in Prince George County and is awaiting her first court appearance.

The incident occurred on November 28 at the Perry Street Lofts, a popular residential complex in the area. Witnesses reported hearing 5-6 gunshots around 4 p.m. that day. Upon arrival, police discovered the victim, 29-year-old DeVaughan Lawrence, lying face up in the parking lot. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Yancey’s arrest was made without incident, with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force. Although no motive has been given for the shooting, Yancey is now facing serious charges related to Lawrence’s death.
This tragic incident marks the 23rd homicide in Petersburg this year, surpassing the previous record of 22 set in 2020. The city has seen a rise in violent crimes, with 21 homicides in 2020 and 18 in the preceding year.
In an effort to combat this alarming trend, arrests have been made in 12 of the cases, including the recent arrest of Yancey. However, there is still a long way to go in ensuring the safety and security of Petersburg residents.
